Karl Kaisel – Kõverdama

VIDEOKOPPI | 12.8.-29.8.2023

Statement
I grew up in Estonia in a peatland forest called Kõverdama. At the moment Kõverdama is being prepared to be cut down by a mining company with the goal of expanding the peat extraction for the production ofgardening soils.

The film consists of broken and incomplete 3D scans of beings from
Kõverdama. They tell stories of the place that used to be, is and will
be. In this work, ghosts of trees float above the destroyed landscapes, flowers growing in punctured spaces, memories creeping in the broken world. It’s clear that a forest cannot be reduced to numbers and pictures, a few species or resources. If the destruction is done the result is this haunting presence.

I use 3D scans of flowers grown on the peat from Kõverdama. I grew
two Cypripedium reginae – a close species to Cypripedium calceolus, an endangered flower whose habitat will be destroyed if the mines are expanded. Cypripedium reginae is a way to show how humans adjust the world according to their needs, in this case, being more decorative and commercially available. This peat from the mines is shipped abroad and used as gardening soil and fertiliser for beings far from Kõverdama with the cost of destruction of a whole ecosystem for the resource. It brings up the question of what is valued in this process? It’s clearly not the existing relationships that are ripped apart.

By contrasting the living, the nonliving and digital I create a web of
connections without an edge or a centre, interconnections that exist
as part of an ecological system. With this web, I bring into question the destruction that is done to this land, to the relationships. The story of Kõverdama is a story of humans, non-humans, living and nonliving.

It’s important to respect and value what we don’t yet understand
and perhaps never will. Humans have a tendency to see everything
as quantifiable and making things somehow understandable for the
system that we live in. It’s time to let go of this view of the world in the face of the ecological crisis. Let’s embrace the unknown and respect it, learn from it, let it tell us the story and through that see the values beyond the monetary and measurable, values that are hidden in the relationships.

Artist Bio
I place myself somewhere between artist and designer with a touch of a filmmaker. As a designer I see value in aesthetics as a tool to access the viewers’ attention and as an artist I am interested in the relationships that humans and nonhumans have; the artificial dichotomy and tension that is dividing the world into natural and unnatural. I grew up in Estonia in a peatland forest called Kõverdama, which is the defining aspect of my creative work. I feel a strong connection to that land and everything that is inhabiting it, living or nonliving. Through that connection I see the world as an intertwined relationship expanding through every aspect of life.

Natasha Cantwell – Leave Your Body

VIDEOKOPPI | 22.7.-8.8.2023

Statement
Shot within the constraints of Melbourne’s ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns, ‘Leave Your Body’ features the apartment where the filmmaker spent the better part of 2020 and 2021. However, where she sees a prison, her partner Sean sees a sanctuary. To him these five rooms are a fortress, not only protecting them from the virus, but also from the social pressure to interact with strangers. Portraying a fictitious version of himself (as well as the film’s various intruders) he defends his solitude while quietly losing touch with reality. ‘Leave Your Body’ is a celebration of isolation, but also an acknowledgement that the longer confinement continues; the harder it is to rejoin society.

Artist Bio
Spanning music video, fashion photography and art projects, Natasha Cantwell‘s work openly embraces awkwardness while drawing from the absurdity of human behaviour. Her 16mm experimental films have screened at festivals and exhibitions worldwide, including Experiments In Cinema in the U.S. and the European Media Art Festival and Stuttgart Filmwinter Festival For Expanded Media in Germany. Alongside her art practice, she produces and curates for festivals and galleries, including the Auckland Underground Film Festival, Channels: The Australian Video Art Festival and the Victorian Archives Centre Gallery. She is currently based in Melbourne, Australia.

Deborah Kelly – For creation

VIDEOKOPPI | 1.7.-18.7.2023

synopsis

For Creation contemplates the glittering webs enveloping matter and sentience. Combining ardent queerness, elegy and homage, For Creation is an animated paper collage constructed from the ruins of obsolete books. Collagists studied SJ Norman’s glorious Liturgy of the Saprophyte, the new sacred literature at the heart of the CREATION religion, and their resulting artworks form figure and field. Musical collaborators and queer dancefloor legends Stereogamous composed the anthemic soundtrack, featuring the voices of SJ Norman and emerging popstar Lupa J.

artists bio

Deborah Kelly’s practice encompasses collage, installation, event and performance. Her projects are often collaborative and concerned with lineages of representation, politics and history in public exchange. Beware of the God (2005), commissioned by the MCA, appeared across Sydney as postcards, videos and projections onto clouds. She has made political billboards, a dancing memorial, black armbands, countless stickers and free posters. No Human Being Is Illegal (2014-19), for the Biennale of Sydney, unfolded through open collage workshops and is now in the collection of the Wellcome Trust, London. She is currently founding a queer science fiction climate change religion: CREATION.

Catherine Arsenault – Débâcle

VIDEOKOPPI | 13.5.-30.5.2023

Synopsis:

Débâcle (a french term referring to spring ice breakups) draws its inspiration from the shifting courses of the St-Lawrence river during winter time. Through a search for the vast ice patch which usually clings to the Quebec North Shore coastline during the colder months, Débâcle bears witness to climate change and the fragility of our coastal territory.

Director’s bio:

Catherine Arsenault is a visual artist born in 1984 in Baie-Comeau, in Canada. In 2010, after completing her BFA at Université Laval, she returns to her hometown to focus on sculpture and drawing. Arsenault compiles numerous projects steming directly from the territory where she grew up, developing an increasingly multidisciplinary practice. Débâcle is her first animation short.

Artist’s statement:

My artistic practice is mainly devoted to sculpture, drawing and animation. Through these mediums, I approach themes related to nature and space. My projects are born in contexts of residencies where I draw, directly from the territory, forms, movements and phenomena which will constitute the anchor points of my visual research in the studio. Composed of a collection of sculptures, landscape drawings and research notebooks, my works bear witness to an intuitive exploration of my environment through which I reappropriate the landscape with a poetic approach.

2021

02:16 min

Synopsis :

Hyljimme kosketusta, jota emme usko ansaitsevamme.

Etsimme ja eksymme. Löydämme ja kadotamme. Kaikki on/oli tässä.
